El Monigote means burning the bad things of the year. We Ecuadorians think that fire is a purifier of evil and the new year will come with new hopes. Along with the burning of stick figures, people melt into a hug.
Eat 12 grapes per person, representing the months of the year, they should be eaten during the last minute of the year that is about to end. The reward is guaranteed good luck in the new year.
In the end, all of these traditions are about one special thing: Leaving all the bad things of this year behind and start the new year with hope and optimism surrounded by the people you love and care for.
